The Opera Handbag in Dragon Scale

The Story: Born from a personal desire for a statement piece to accompany me to the Prague Opera, this handbag is a study in texture and structural elegance. I wanted to create something that felt both ancient and architectural—an accessory that could hold its own in a setting of velvet curtains and gold leaf.

The Process: The centerpiece of this bag is the Dragon Scale smocking pattern, a technique that transforms flat fabric into a rhythmic, three-dimensional surface. This project served as a deep dive into the manipulation of fabric volume, where the “sculpting” of the material is just as important as the stitching itself.

Technical Details:

  • Material: Deep Black Faux Suede. The weight and nap of the suede provide the necessary body to hold the peaks and valleys of the smocking without losing its softness.
  • Technique: Hand-manipulated Dragon Scale Smocking. Each scale is formed by precisely measured stitch points on the reverse of the fabric, gathered to create the geometric “scales” on the face.
  • Vision for the Future: This piece marks the beginning of my exploration into smocking. I intend to bring these rhythmic patterns further into the Atelier, exploring how they can be integrated into larger accessories and future costume pieces for the Wardrobe.
