Echoes of Gotham

Strangely enough, when I think back on all the costumes I’ve made, I often forget about the Catwoman one. Not because I didn’t enjoy it—far from it—but probably because it was a cosplay, not one of my original creations.

As I grew more confident in sewing, I naturally started dreaming up more complex projects, and Catwoman was one of the first that came to mind. I’ve been a Batman fan for as long as I can remember, and I fell in love with the costume the moment I saw Batman Returns at age ten.

One day, while browsing in a fabric shop, I stumbled upon the perfect material and decided on the spot to start the project. I did a lot of research to replicate the movie version as accurately as possible. That’s when I noticed something was off: I had reversed the iconic white stitches on the knees. And that’s when I realised… cosplay might not be for me.

I have the utmost respect for cosplayers who go to incredible lengths to reproduce every detail faithfully. But as I worked on this costume, I felt more and more drawn to creating my own designs instead.

It might sound mystical, but to me, a cosplay costume doesn’t really need me—it already exists. My original costumes, on the other hand, do. They’re ideas that don’t exist until I bring them into the world. I’m the only tool that can give them life. Weird, I know…

Still, even if cosplay isn’t my path, I absolutely loved making this Catwoman costume. It was straightforward, a lot of fun—especially the claws—and it only took me about three months to complete. My shortest project to date!

I even made the boots myself, modifying an old pair and covering them with fabric. Unfortunately, during the photo shoot, I discovered they were so old that the platform completely disintegrated as I walked. I came home waddling like a duck… but with a bunch of great photos!
