Woodland Companions
The Story: This piece captures a quiet moment of calm on the forest floor. A rabbit with a prize carrot and a squirrel with a fresh acorn meet beneath the shade of a towering mushroom. I wanted to create a scene that felt like a snapshot from an untold fableâtwo different creatures enjoying the same peaceful shelter.
The Process: I designed this piece with a specific goal in mind: to create a gentle entry point for beginners to master the Long and Short stitch. Often seen as a daunting “needle-painting” technique, I wanted to show how it can be used to create the beautiful, organic glow of a mushroom cap without being overwhelming. By combining this with the playfulness of Turkey Work for the squirrelâs tail, the project becomes a masterclass in texture that stays accessible for those just starting their journey.
Technical Details:
- The Squirrel: Features Turkey Work (Ghiordes knot) to create a soft, 3D brushable tail that stands out from the fabric.
- The Mushroom: The cap is worked in a dense Long and Short stitch to show the gradient of the russet tones, while the stem uses a lighter, vertical stitch to give it a woody texture.
- The Ground: A row of dark green French Knots or Coral Stitch (depending on your preference) provides a mossy foundation for the scene.
- The Butterfly: A delicate touch of Padded Satin Stitch to add a final pop of color to the mushroom cap.
